CLOUGH STILL LOOKING TO ADD TO HIS SQUAD

9 August 2016

NIGEL Clough would still like to add to his Championship squad before the transfer window closes.

The Brewers boss said: "We still need a couple more I think before the end of August. We are still making calls and searching for that extra little bit of quality in certain areas whether it is cover or ideally people to threaten the starting line up.

"I think we need another striker. Lucas Akins gives us so many options and flexibility - he played up the middle against Nottingham Forest and he can play wide but if you do that you lose him as a striking option - so ideally we would like one more striker. Maybe also a bit of defensive cover, especially if we lose one through injury and suspension."

That defensive cover might be provided by former Derby County defender Shaun Barker who is still fighting back to fitness after a horrific injury playing for the Rams in 2012.

Clough said: "He's just training with us with a view to seeing what happens. He's getting close to getting back in so we haven't ruled him out at all.

"We want him to contribute on the pitch and he wants to get out and play but he has a lot more to offer than that as well. There will be plenty of times this season with 10 minutes to go that we will need someone to come on and head the ball in our box and I can't think of anyone better than Shaun. He's a good positive influence to have around and has a lot of Championship experience. If we have room budget wise and he's OK it's a no brainer for us."
