BURTON Albion defender Phil Edwards has joined Oxford United on a season-long loan.

The 30-year-old has made over 100 appearances for the Brewers since his arrival from Rochdale on a free transfer in 2013.

He will now link up with Michael Appleton’s men until the end of the 2016/17 season.

Nigel Clough said: “Phil is too good of a player to just sit around on the bench and he’s done too well for the club over the past two or three years.

“Oxford came in and Phil said he wanted to go so we’ve allowed it to happen, but more for Phil.

“For selfish reasons we could have kept him around in the squad just in case but he’s too good of a player for that.”
