NEWCASTLE: ON THE WHISTLE MATCH REPORT

17 December 2016

After Tuesday's defeat to Huddersfield Nigel Clough made two changes for the visit of Newcastle United at the Pirelli Stadium.

Out went Jamie Ward and Hamza Choudhury so in came John Mousinho and Tom Naylor.

Chelsea loanee Christian Atsu showed why is in contracted to a Premier League team as his pace got him in behind the Albion defence to latch onto Jonjo Shelvey's through ball but Jon McLaughlin was very quick off his line to block the pacey winger.

GOAL: The league-leaders took the lead 16 minutes in when Matt Ritchie skipped past John Mousinho before driving to the byline and pulling it back across goal for Dwight Gayle to poke it past Jon McLaughlin (0-1).

GOAL: Newcastle were ahead four just four minutes when Lloyd Dyer scored his 4th goal of the season. The move started off down the right with Lucas Akins who layed it to John Brayford before the loanee played a great ball across goal and Lloyd Dyer was on hand to tap home (1-1)!

The Brewers applied more pressure after the equalising goal and Newcastle looked nervy when Lloyd Dyer made his way down the left and drilled a great ball into the box but Lucas Akins' shot was blocked well by Ciaran Clark.

GOAL: Against the run of play Mohamed Diame put Newcastle back in front when his dispossessed Damien McCrory on the edge of the box before advancing and slotting it past Jon McLaughlin (1-2).

Half time: Burton Albion 1-2 Newcastle United

Both teams came out unchanged after the half time break.

The start of the second half was rather flat, although it was the Brewers that saw most of the ball.

John Mousinho was making the most of his return to the side and proved his worth when Matt Ritchie was picked out inside the box with time and space, he was allowed to turn and shoot but the Albion skipper was there to throw his body on the line and deny him.

Lucas Akins was playing in a different position than usual, he was partners with Chris O'Grady up front and he should have had the Brewers level with 15 minutes to go when Lloyd Dyer did well to create space down the left before pulling the ball back to Akins who side-footed it over the crossbar from 12 yards.

That proved to be his last involvement as he was replaced by Jamie Ward minutes later.

Jamie Ward looked lively when he was introduced and has the Newcastle defence on their toes when Chris O'Grady won the ball in the air which fell to Ward who turned and let off a shot which flew just wide of Karl Darlow's right-hand post.

It was Ward again causing Newcastle problems when he controlled the ball on the left before drilling a low cross into the box which was deflected but Karl Darlow made a smart save at his near post.

The closest he came was from 30 yards when he rifled a powerful shot towards goal  which troubled Darlow who spilled the ball but it somehow stayed out of Newcastle's goal.
