ROTHERHAM: ON THE WHISTLE MATCH REPORT

29 December 2016

Nigel Clough made one change to the side that narrowly lost to Aston Villa on Boxing Day. In came Chris O'Grady for Jamie Ward.

Paul Warne has managed to get his Rotherham team together and pick up a bit of form at the AESSEAL New York Stadium recently, and they started the brightest on a cold Thursday night as Danny Ward lined up a free kick some 25 yards out which was well-struck and it forced Jon McLaughlin into a great save away to his right.

The Millers continued to apply pressure on Burton Albion and again Jon McLaughlin was called into action when Joe Newell danced between the Albion defence but the Brewers stopper was quick off his line to block the shot.

Lloyd Dyer seemed to be enjoying the Championship, a division he has bags of experience in, and he did well down the left to beat his man before teeing up Lucas Akins form six yards who got his feet mixed up and saw his effort go wide of Lewis Price's goal.

GOAL: Burton Albion hadn't seen much of the ball in the first half, but when they got the slightest chance they certainly took it. Chris O'Grady hadn't scored for the Brewers this season but on his 20th start for the club and against his former team Chris O'Grady scored his first Albion goal! Matty Palmer found Lucas Akins in the box who curled an effort towards goal, it was spilled by Lewis Price but O'Grady was on hand to slot it into the net (0-1).

GOAL: And just five minutes later the lead was doubled. John Brayford picked up his third assist in as manygames when he whipped in a cross from the right for Jackson Irvine to rush on to and head into the net off the under side of the cross bar (0-2).

GOAL: The home side grabbed a goal back in the first half stoppage time when a free kick was headed goalwards but the inital header was saved by Jon McLaughlin before the ball fell into the path of Tom Adeyemi to tapped over the line from a yard (1-2).

HT: Rotherham United 1-2 Burton Albion

Tom Flanagan replaced John Brayford at the half time interval. Brayford did spend a period in the first half receiving treatment on a head injury.

Peter Odemwingie was suspended for the reverse fixture back on 3rd December at the Pirelli, and he only made the bench for tonight's fixture but he was introduced just after the hour mark as he replaced Anthony Forde.

Rotherham took real confidence from their goal before half time and they were nearly level through Darnell Fisher, who has never scored for the Millers, as he was picked out at the far post but his volley went wide of an empty Burton Albion net.

Odemwingie was playing in the Premier League last season and he has Jon McLaughlin in action towards the latter stages of the game when he cut inside and let fly with his left foot but the man between the Albion sticks held on to shot really well to keep the ball out.

Burton Albion were hanging on with the skin of their teeth in search for their first away win of the season, but it wasn't without trying from Rotherham as Izzy Brown won the ball on the left before curling an effort just wide of the far post.

It was announced that there would be five more minutes of added time, so step up Shaun Barker, he was brought on for Matty Palmer.
