DINANGA NETS TWICE AS THE RESERVES BEAT WIGAN 3-1

23 February 2016

THE Brewers named a strong side against Wigan Athletic with seven first-teamers involved.

Marcus Dinanga netted for the reserves again as they overturned Wigan Athletic by three goals to one. Despite two goals in the first half, it was the second half that held the most entertainment.

GOAL: The away side took the lead after a quarter of an hour. A whipped ball into the box caused trouble in the Albion defence and forced Darius Charles to send a looping header past his own goalkeeper. 0-1

It was a physical game in the early exchanges but the Brewers managed to work a good opening. Marcus Harness picked the ball up before finding Callum Reilly down the left who looked to cross it into the box but he connected wrong and the ball found its way over the crossbar.

Evans kept the away team ahead on the half hour mark when Harness played through Dinanga who travelled well with the ball before unleashing a left-footed shot at goal but the Wigan stopper got down well at his near post to deny the academy star.

GOAL: Eight minutes before the break, Burton were level! Callum Reilly did some great work down the left beating two defenders in the process before pulling it back to Harness who first-time drilled it past Evans.

Minutes later the Brewers nearly edged in front. Some great work by Marcus Harnes down the right gave Dinanga the chance to shoot at goal, only to be denied by a combination of goalkeeper and defender.

HT: Burton Albion 1-1 Wigan Athletic

Both teams came out for the second half unchanged.

GOAL: Just 45 seconds into the second half, Burton took the lead. Academy star Marcus Dinanga was sent through by Ben Fox and he made no mistake in firing low past Evans at his near post. 2-1

The Brewers made a double sub on the hour mark. Off came Charles and Reilly for Garnett and Hallahan.

The lively Garnett had the chance to put the Albion ahead midway into the second half. A long ball up field was cleverly flicked on by Harness to Garnett but his chip dropped just wide of the post.

Hamilton went straight down the other end for the visitors and after a mad scramble in the box, he fired over from 12 yards.

The game started to liven up with 15 minutes to go. Ben Fox sent a ball down the line which Marcus Dinanga latched on to and after tricking his way past the defenders, he sent a left-footed shot just wide of Evans' post.

It could have been three with eight minutes to go and Harness again won the flick-on to Dinanga who raced through on goal but he dragged a left-footed shot wide.

GOAL: A third was added through Marcus Dinanga late on in the game. Garnett's cross found the head of Harness but his effort rebounded off the bar and fell into the path of Dinanga who made no mistake in heading home. 3-1
