"THE MOTIVATION IS TO STAY TOP OF THE LEAGUE"

19 February 2016

“The motivation is to stay top of the league,"

TEAM spirit is something Burton Albion haven’t struggled with for the past couple of seasons, hence the amazing success of winning the Sky Bet League Two title and now challenging for promotion to the Championship.

Nigel Clough said: “The motivation is to stay top of the league, that’s the only motivation you need.”

The Brewers take on Southend United on Monday night who are led by ex-Derby County manager Phil Brown. Burton Fans might remember him for his programmes notes in the second leg of the play-off semi-final ‘See you at Wembley’.

“I have always got on with Phil (Brown) over the years - I saw him at a game at Coventry a few weeks back,” said Clough.

Going off last season’s points tally, the Brewers need nine wins from the final 16 games to be in with a chance of automatic promotion.

Nigel Clough said: “You want the players to take it upon themselves now with 16 games to go.

“It’s still over 1/3 of the season so there’s still a long long way to go, we’re aware of that.

“It’s an old cliché but let’s take each game as it comes, we will try to get something at Southend and against Walsall then it will take care of itself after that.”
