BURTON MP Andrew Griffiths dropped into a Burton school to take a first-hand look at a project aimed at encouraging youngsters to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Riverview Primary School is taking part in the Ferrero +Sport Move and Learn project, delivered by Burton Albion Community Trust.ÂIt is a six-week programme designed for Year 5 children with a dual approach to education:
 - Promoting balanced diets in line with government recommendations;
 - Enabling children to get active.Â
For 45 minutes each week, students learn about different topics – including diet and nutrition, exercise, the human body and hydration – through a series of interactive fun exercises.Â
Andrew Griffiths dropped in on one of the sessions and was impressed with the project.Â
He said: “It was great to see Burton Albion Community Trust doing what it does best – engaging with young people in schools. It builds the right kind of mentality and will help ensure these kids grow up being healthy and knowing what’s good for them.”Â
Richard Laming, from sponsors Ferrero, added: “What we love about the project is the way it brings together education about health and diet with a sports activity outside the classroom. It was great to see it being delivered at Riverview and all the happy faces of the youngsters.”Â
Riverview head teacher Mandy Whitehouse said: “We have a problem with obesity. Hopefully this will give the children the skills to take into secondary school and be more healthy in adult life.”Â
