NIGEL CLOUGH HOPING THE CHAMPIONSHIP WILL SUIT MATTY PALMER

20 May 2016

MATTY Palmer and Marcus Harness have had their optional year active on their contracts by manager Nigel Clough who is building for the future with the two youngsters.

Palmer spent some time at Oldham on loan this season and quickly picked up some man of the match accolades and even chipped in with a goal to help Oldham finish comfortably in League One.

The word has it that you get more time on the ball in the Championship, which in many eyes will suit Matty Palmer.

“That’s a possibility, we’re looking forward to seeing him play in it to see,” said Clough.

He added: “There is an argument that says you get a bit more time in the Championship and it’s not the 100 miles per hour of League One and I think that’s the case as you go up.

“He is probably going to have a little bit more time to display the quality that he’s got.

“We’re taking up the option on his contract first and foremost then we’ll be offering him a new one on the back of that.”

Marcus Harness has featured in a few of Albion’s games this season particularly towards the back end of the season. Clough is hoping the young winger can gain playing time out on loan in League Two before coming back and making an impact with Burton.

He said: “It’s difficult to tell at this stage but we want him in the squad certainly for pre-season and then it might be a case that he goes out and gets some loan experience maybe in League Two.

“We need bodies around in pre-season games, you always pick up one or two knocks.

“People surprise you in pre-season some will come back not as fit as you hoped and some will come back absolutely flying and force their way in to the reckoning.”
