THE British Army were in attendance at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday to promote their special armed forces charity match on November 16.
Sir Bobby Charlton will be among the VIPS as the Pirelli Stadium plays host to The Game of Remembrance on November 16, with all football fans urged to support the event and help raise cash for military charities. The match between teams representing the British and German Armed Forces will cost just £5 for adults and £1 for under 17s.
It follows on from the Game of Truce, which took place in December 2014 when football teams from the British Army and the German Armed Forces played each other to commemorate the centenary of the first Christmas of the Great War, when the guns fell silent and the soldiers climbed into No Man’s Land to swap presents, drink each other’s health and – so popular history relates – challenge each other to impromptu games of football.
Now, on November 16, the two teams will face each other once again at the Pirelli Stadium in the Game of Remembrance - a charity match commemorating 100 years since the end of the Battle of the Somme.
It will raise funds for British and German military charities, including the Royal British Legion, using the international language of football to remember yesterday’s fallen while helping the wounded of today.
Fans will also be treated to a full military parade before the match, with marching bands and VIP guests including football legend and World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton.
The Game of Remembrance is about commemoration and football, friendship and rivalry - and two nations with a shared passion for the Soldier’s Game.
The game will kick off at 7.45pm. Tickets are available online at www.burtonalbionfc.co.uk/tickets.
