BURTON Albion footballers have visited a Stretton school to support Burton Albion Community Trust's Primary Stars Programme.
The youngsters at William Shrewsbury Primary School were visited by Brewers first teamers Jon McLaughlin, Kyle McFadzean, Lucas Akins and Tom Naylor.
The players answered questions from the pupils not only about their football careers but also what books they liked to read.
They also listened to the children read some of their favourite stories.
The visit, organised by Burton Albion Community Trust, supported the Premier League Primary Stars programme – which encourages pupils to develop a passion for learning as well as sport.
The idea behind the visit was to help narrow the gap between those reading at the required level for their age and those under-achieving. It has proven particularly successful in transforming boys’ attitudes to literacy and in engaging youngsters with a passion for football with a love for reading.
Matt Hancock, BACT Community Manager, who accompanied the players on the visit, said: “The players had a great time and really engaged with the pupils. Reading skills are vital in all walks of life and the programme helps to deliver that message as well as giving youngsters the chance to meet the Burton Albion players.”
