CLOUGH SAYS SUBS MUST HAVE AN IMPACT

6 December 2017

NIGEL Clough says that he is looking for his substitutes to make more of an impact from the bench.

The Brewers suffered defeat to late goals against both Sunderland and Derby and the Brewers boss thinks that the substitutions were the difference.

He said: “You look at the last two games we have lost. Sunderland brought on a sub who scored. Derby brought on a sub who scored the winner. Our subs aren’t having that kind of impact.

“When you have a choice from seven subs when you make changes you want them to have an impact on the game. In the last two games the opposition have done it.”

Clough is also looking for those players who are left out of the starting line up to be ready and able to make a similar impact.

He said: “We have to be certain that players are mentally and physically right to come on and have an impact on the game. We thought on Saturday that the bench we put out there were better in that department than the ones we left out.

“As a sub there are certain things you have to do and as disappointed as your personal feeling are that you aren’t in the starting line up all that matters is the team. If you aren’t in the starting 11 you do all you can for the team. Even if you don’t get on the pitch you can have an influence but ultimately be ready and if you do get on then affect the game - and our subs haven’t done that enough this season.

“In modern day football no-one plays every game so you have to deal with the disappointment of being left out.”
