BURTON’S Queen’s Hospital’s has received a cheque for £500 from the Bass Charity Vase to help support prostate cancer screenings.
This year’s annual Bass Charity Vase fundraising football match was played at the Pirelli Stadium in July with West Brom beating Burton Albion in an entertaining game.
A £500 cheque from the proceeds has already been handed over at a Brewers game to Burton Albion Community Trust and at half-time in the home match against Preston, a further donation was made.
This time the Bass Charity Vase handed over the money to the hospital staff who have joined forces with BACT to provide innovative prostate cancer screenings at the Pirelli Stadium which have helped save lives and raise awareness. Screenings have also taken place at other community venues including the African Caribbean Association and Freemasons lodges.
Accepting the cheque on behalf of the hospital was Jyoti Shah, consultant urological surgeon at Queen’s Hospital in Burton and Sarah Minns (urology advanced nurse practitioner).
Jyoti said: “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in this country and we are delighted to accept this donation to help us continue to raise community awareness and help as many people as possible.”
Dave Mellor from the Bass Charity Vase said: “We are pleased to be able to make another donation from the proceeds of this year’s game. We recognise the great work that the hospital team is doing in regards to prostate cancer and its successful partnership with Burton Albion Community Trust and are happy to help.”
Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson said: “We were delighted to once again be able to host the Bass Vase match and help the charity to make important donations to great causes.”
The Bass Vase was founded in Burton in 1889 as a football competition to be competed for annually by major teams, particularly Football League clubs. The proceeds from the games are donated to charities.
Its patrons were Lord Burton and Hamar Alfred Bass, who presented a magnificent inscribed silver Rose Bowl (reputed to be one of the most valuable trophies in British football) to be held by the competition winners.
Many famous clubs and players have taken part since the competition started.
Other past winners include Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Coventry City, Derby County, Leicester City, Liverpool, Notts County, Nottingham Forest and Stoke City.
