PERFORMANCES between now and New Year’s Day will be a factor in what business Nigel Clough looks to do in the January transfer window.

The window opens on January 1 but Albion play five games between Bolton on Saturday and Sheffield Wednesday on New Year’s Day which will shape the manager’s thinking.

He said: “The next five games will probably determine how we go about our business in the transfer window.

“There will be certainly some players going. The squad’s not top heavy but they are virtually all fit at the moment, so we have three or four not quite in the 18. Generally speaking, the squad has stayed pretty fit so there will be a couple more going out than coming in.

“As it is at most football clubs, everybody is available whether it is permanent or loans.”

In terms of what type of players he is aiming to bring in, the Brewers boss will be looking for an attacking threat.

“We are looking for good players who can come in, improve us and help us get results. Usually that’s in the attacking part of the field. I still think defensively, especially away from home, we haven’t been too bad but we need a little spark at the other end of the pitch.”
