WOLVES: ON THE WHISTLE MATCH REPORT

4 February 2017

Nigel Clough handed a debut to deadline day signing Michael Kightly, as well as home debuts to Lasse Vigen Christensen and Cauley Woodrow.

Lasse Vigen Christensen got himself an assist on his debut away at QPR a week ago, and he nearly had his first Burton Albion goal after two minutes when Tom Flanagan crossed from the right but the Danish midfielder's flick was inches too high to trouble Carl Ikeme.

Marvin Sordell is yet to open his account for the Brewers but he could have had his first goal on the half hour mark when Michael Kightly delivered a dangerous cross into the box which fell kindly for Sordell but he slipped at the point of shooting.

Jon McLaughlin was called into action for the first time on the half hour mark Nouha Dicko raced through on goal and curled an effort to McLaughlin's left but the Albion stopper did well to get down and tip the shot wide of the post.

GOAL: The Albion stopper gave away a penalty eight minutes later when George Saville curled in a cross from the left which evaded everybody and as McLaughlin went to claim the ball he brought down David Edwards. £13M man Helder Costa stepped up and scored from the spot (0-1).

HT: Burton Albion FC 0-1 Wolves

Burton Albion didn't deserve to go into the half time break behind and they certainly came out in the second half with more fire in their bellies. Michael Kightly picked up the ball on the left before working his way into a shooting opportunity and bending an effort towards the top corner, only to be denied by a fully-stretched Carl Ikeme.

GOAL: Michael Kightly had troubled Carl Ikeme twice in quick succession, but he couldn't find his way past the Wolves stopper until Marvin Sordell danced his way through three defenders before pulling the ball back to the debutant who tapped into an empty net (1-1).

Cauley Woodrow was making his first Burton Albion start, and nearly had his first Burton Albion goal five minutes form time when he teed up a shot from distance which slightly deflected off Lucas Akins but Carl Ikeme somehow kept it out of the Wolves net.

GOAL: Cauley DID have his first Burton Albion goal. The Brewers picked up a habit of conceding late goals recently, but the tables turned and Cauley Woodrow guided the ball over the line in the 92nd minute to secure a vital win (2-1).
