CARDIFF: ON THE WHISTLE MATCH REPORT

21 January 2017

Nigel Clough made two changes to the team that lost last time out against Wigan. In came Tom Flanagn and Tom Naylor for Jamie Ward and Chris O'Grady.

The opening exchanges of this Championship game were fairly even, until the 20 minute mark when the home side could have taken the lead when Kenneth Zohore brought the ball down inside the box and shot through a crowd of bodies but Jon McLaughlin got down to it quickly and did enough to tip it round the post.

Luke Murphy was making his second Burton Albion start and he nearly grabbed his first assist when he hooked the ball through to Lloyd Dyer who raced through on goal but with a defender chasing down the left-winger his shot was sliced wide.

It was a first half that won't last long in the memory of any football supporter.

HT: Cardiff City 0-0 Burton Albion

Both teams emerged from the break unchanged.

The second half followed in the same fashion as the first, both teams enjoying stints with the ball but the Brewers were first to threaten as Marvin Sordell held the ball up well inside the box before laying it off to Tom Flanagan who let fly from distance and it was only inches above the crossbar!

Marcus Harness looked to take up a new role behind the striker as he replaced Matty Palmer with just over 15 minutes of the game to play.

GOAL: As the clock struck 90 minutes the Brewers gave away a free kick just outside the box in which they didn't clear and Rhys Healey was on hand to head into the back of the net (1-0).

FT: Cardiff City 1-0 Burton Albion
