LUKE VARNEY INJURY UPDATE

7 January 2017

LUKE Varney made his Burton Albion debut in today's 2-0 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road, but it was cut short just after the hour mark through injury.

Varney challenged the Watford goalkeeper inside the area and seemed to land awkwardly on his ribs, and Nigel Clough gave us an update on the new striker.

Clough said: "He's not in the best of shapes, he's had to go to hospital. He got a whack in the rips or somewhere around there and he's struggling to get his breath at the moment so he's going to get checked out, hopefully it won't be too bad.

"He was conscious, he just couldn't get his breath. Sometimes when you get a whack in the ribs it can have that effect. He had the oxygen on and everything, they've been brilliant Watford looking after him so he will get checked out. When they do crack (ribs), if that's what it is, it's a bit difficult to tell how long because it's extremely uncomfortable.

"He was everything that we hoped he would be. He won his headers, he ran around and got hold of the ball for us and should have scored early on in the second half with a header as well."
