Marvin Sordell was named on the Brewers bench against Preston after only signing just over 24 hours ago from Coventry City.

The Brewers had thrived off Matty Palmer's delivery all season, and Nigel Clough has been critical that his team hasn't scored enough from set pieces, and the same applied 25 minutes into the game when Palmer whipped in a free kick from the left which just needed the slightest touch to guide it over the line, but instead it was cleared by Daniel Johnson of Preston.

It wasn't the most exciting first half, but Burton Albion did have the better chances and would have been ahead but for Bailey Wright as Lucas Akins whipped a ball in from the right but the North End defender managed to poke it behind for a corner before it reached Chris O'Grady in the middle.

GOAL: The visitors took the lead in first half stoppage time as Callum Robinson picked the ball up on the left before cutting inside and crossing towards the back post where Tom Clarke was onrushing to meet the ball which looked like it was making its way out of play but the central defender scooped it back into the middle which evaded Jon McLaughlin and found its way into the back of the net via the far post (0-1).

HT: Burton Albion 0-1 Preston North End.

Marvin Sordell only signed for the Brewers at 11AM yesterday but Nigel Clough gave him his chance at the half time break as he replaced Chris O'Grady.

The Brewers came out strong in the second half and could have been level within 50 seconds of the restart as Jamie Ward pulled the ball back from the byline which fell perfectly to Lucas Akins who put too much height on his shot which found its way over the bar.

Marcus Harness was impressive last time out against Rotherham when he was given the final minutes of the game and Nigel Clough showed faith in the youngster once again as he brought him on for the final 20 minutes in place of Jamie Ward.

Hamza Choudhury was given the final ten minutes of the game to try and help Albion grab a late goal, he came on in place of John Mousinho.

The game could have been sealed with just under ten minutes to play as Greg Cunningham beat two men down the left before crossing deep to Jordan Hugill but his header fell just wide of Jon McLaughlin's left-hand post.
