VARNEY PLEASED WITH TOUGH PRE-SEASON SO FAR

11 July 2017

Brewers forward Luke Varney is pleased with how his Burton Albion teammates have faired so far during pre-season as they completed their seventh day of fitness work.

He said: “They’re all tough days at the minute, Chris Beardsley reckons we’ve ran about 20k today. We are gradually getting better each year and today it was good to finish it off with a game. It’s weird because you try and compare the sessions, some of the lads find others harder than others. We’ve ran around Allestree Park, Elvaston Castle, done some track work, I find the track work harder than the long distance stuff.”

Varney who slipped when the side did the X-Runner at Holme-Pierrepont on the hay bails on the assault course said: “I said before we started to Tom Naylor and Luke Murphy before that I’d take it a bit easy but once the group began the competitive edge took over me and I finished third. I caught my big toe in the hay and unfortunately fell.

Varney also praised how the new signings were fitting into the group well: “We’ve had a bit of ball work, it’s always pleasing to see the new lads in action. They’ve been impressive and you can see what they’ll bring to the side. Liam Boyce today scored a few goals, Matt Lund has looked brilliant and I am sure they will settle into the group just fine."
