NIGEL CLOUGH STILL LOOKING TO ADD TO SQUAD

20 July 2017

BREWERS manager Nigel Clough is happy with his current squad of players but is still looking to add two or three to the current group before the season starts.

So far the Brewers have brought in Hope Akpan, Jake Buxton, Liam Boyce, Luke Murphy, Matty Lund and Stephen Warnock.

Clough said: "We're still two or three players short squad wise so we're working on those at the moment. We are looking into a few positions, a goalkeeper, a defender, possiblity of a wide player and a forward.

We're very pleased with the rest of them, Hope (Akpan) the latest addition. I thought he showed enough in 45 minutes against Solihull considering he hadn't done anything for a while. We're looking forward to getting him up to speed in the next couple of weeks.

"The likes of Akpan, Buxton and Warnock bring some much needed aggressiveness to the side. You see with Akpan at Solihull he closes down, uses his strength, Warnock isn't afraid to put his foot in and neither is Jake when he is fit. Kyle also has that in his game."

Clough is also pleased with a change of scenary as the lads are currently in Southampton: "We've come down south for a bit of sunshine but it's been pouring it down. As much as pre-season is about getting fit and playing games, it's about the other side of it which is getting together and getting to know each other, building bonds and relationships that have got to last nine months and more.

They will still be working and training but it's more down-time to what they've been used to in the last two or three weeks which has been an incentive and very hard work for them. It's been remarkable the lack of injuries, full testament to the lads for the shape they have come back in. It's just Luke Varney who has got a niggle which is ironic as he's one of the fittest."
