MANAGER'S VERDICT: WEST BROM

26 July 2017

NIGEL Clough was pleased with his side's efforts against a quality West Brom side after the 1-0 Bass Vase defeat.

The Brewers boss said: "It was very encouraging, considering the standard of the opposition. They were top ten in the Premier League last season and we still have a couple of players out.

"The team we put out competed well and we lost to a set play which is one of West Brom's strengths.

"When we played Wimbledon they were more high energy and West Brom have the technically gifted players we faced tonight so it has been a good contrast.

"It's a different way of playing. West Brom may not have as many attacks against you as Championship clubs but when they do it's quality and they can unlock your defence.

"But I thought we competed very well and it was just a corner and Stephen Bywater got slightly blocked off. They are hard to defend and they got through and got the goal."
