BREWERS SCORE FOUR IN MICKLEOVER WIN

14 July 2017

Goals from Luke Varney, Marcus Harness, Marcus Dinanga and a penalty from Matty Lund secured a second win in as many pre-season game for Burton as they beat Mickleover Sports 4-0.

All of the goals came in the second-half as the Brewers made it nine goals in two games so far this pre-season.

The Brewers had the better of the first-half, with Matty Fryatt and Liam Boyce proving to be a constant threat to the Mickleover defence. However, it was the hosts who had the first real chance when ex-Brewer Evan Garnett fired wide in the opening minutes.

Matty Palmer then went close for Burton. Jackson Irvine produced a wonderful backheel to find his midfield partner who forced a good save.

Bradley Grayson was proving a threat for the hosts and he went close three times in the first-half. He first fired wide after Evan Garnett broke clear and found him from a Burton corner. Moments later the forward attempted a lob which rattled the top of the crossbar. The striker drove through the Burton defence 10 minutes before half-time and forced a good save out of Harry Campbell.

Fryatt went close when Tom Naylor picked him out with a brilliant ball over the top of the Mickleover defence but the striker volleyed wide. Liam Boyce came close to scoring when he found himself clear in the box but his effort was blocked by Pablo Mills.

Burton started the second-half strongly, with Luke Varney going close from the edge of the box. Andy Dales went close for the hosts with an effort from range flying just-past the near-post.

A spell of intense pressure from the Brewers was rewarded on 70 minutes when striker Luke Varney turned the ball in from close range. Marcus Dinanga then rattled the crossbar with a powerful effort from just-inside the box.

Marcus Harness doubled Burton’s lead when he cut inside from the left to unleash a powerful drive into the roof of the Mickleover net.

Adam Baskerville then tested the reflexes of Campbell. A lovely move by the hosts saw the forward free in the box but the Burton goalkeeper smothered the shot.

Dinanga’s goal came after he capitalised on a defensive error to slot past Draper in the Mickleover goal and make it 3-0.

Harness then drove at the defence in the final minute and produced a cross that was adjudged to have been handled in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. Lund scored with a powerful spot-kick with the final kick of the game as the Brewers ran out 4-0 winners.
