MATCH REPORT: SOLIHULL MOORS 1-2 BURTON ALBION

18 July 2017

NIGEL Clough opted to split his team into two XIs, with one team playing 70 minutes and the other XI finishing the game.

New signing Hope Akpan started the game, after signing two hours before kick off.

Despite a goalless first half it was full of chances for both sides, but neither of the teams could find the back of the net.

Trialist matey Fryatt came closest for the Brewers after just a minute when he twisted and turned on the edge of the box before his shot clipped the top of the crossbar and went out for a goal kick.

Hope Akpan searched for a debut goal but his long-range effort on 15 minutes sailed harmlessly over the crossbar.

Simeon Maye was the main threat for Solihull in the first half, and he came close when he tried a 25-yard effort but Burton Albion goalkeeper Stephen Bywater was equal to it, and the experienced stopper did well to tip it over the crossbar.

Nigel Clough made four changes at the break as Turner, Naylor, Fryatt, Bywater and Akpan all made way for Mousinho, Warnock, Lund, Campbell and Boyce.

The hosts started the half the strongest as Jermaine Hylton tried a powerful shot from the edge of the box but Harry Campbell pulled off a wonderful save to deny him. The young goalkeeper got his fingertips to the shot to tip it over the bar.

Hylton again was the danger man as the tricky winger got himself inside the box before shooting from a tight angle but his effort clipped the outside of the post and went wide.

Clough made the rest of changes around the hour mark which saw Murphy, McFadzean, Irvine, Dyer and Sordell replace Fox, Cotterill, Palmer, McCrory and Sbarra.

The deadlock was broken on 69 minutes when Marvin Sordell drove into the box and cut the ball back from the byline where Matty Lund was waiting to tap home with his left foot to score his third goal in as many pre-season games.

Solihull weren't behind for long as Luke Benbow chipped the ball over Harry Campbell from the edge of the box to find the back of the net.

Burton Albion were back in front with seven minutes to play. Lloyd Dyer's initial effort from inside the box was well saved by the goalkeeper but Marvin Sordell was on hand to tidy things up and put the ball in to the back of the net.

A third pre-season win for the Brewers. Solihull Moors 1-2 Burton Albion FC.
