SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: ON THE WHISTLE MATCH REPORT

7 March 2017

Nigel Clough made three changes to the side that draw at Ashton Gate on Saturday. In came Tom Naylor, Kyle McFadzean and Luke Varney for John Mousinho, Luke Murphy and Cauley Woodrow respectively.

Sheffield Wednesday thumped Norwich City 5-1 at the weekend, and they scored with their only shots on target and that wasn't to be the case in this game. Ross Wallace drove to the byline before delivering a good ball into the box which Fernando Forestieri got on the end of his but shot was block at the point of contact.

Barry Bannan played under the now-Brewers boss Nigel Clough at Derby County during a loan spell, and he nearly came back to haunt his old boss when he found space some distance out but his powerful effort whistled just wide of Jon McLaughlin's left-hand post.

GOAL: The Sheffield Wednesday fans have seen some spectacular goals this season, and they were treated to a long-range effort from Ross Wallace on 16 minutes when the 31-year-old tried his luck from 30 yards which had enough placement on it to beat Jon McLaughlin low to his left (1-0).

GOAL: The home side were ahead for just eight minutes before Burton Albion hit back! Jackson Irvine hadn't scored since Albion's away win at Rotherham, but his 9th goal of the season was well worth the wait. Marvin Sordell was denied by Keiren Westwood in the build-up to the goal and his double save gifted the Brewers a corner which was headed away at the near post before the looping ball fell to Irvine 18 yards out who hit a vicious volley with his left foot leaving the goalkeeper with no chance as it clipped the inside of the post (1-1).

HT: Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Burton Albion FC

Sheffield Wednesday rolled the dice twice early in the second half as they brought on Adam Reach and Steven Fletcher who replaced Ross Wallace and Sam Winnall respectively.

Adam Reach seemed to p;lay in a wide role for Wednesday, but that didn't stop him from teeing up a long-range effort on 70 minutes which stung the palms of Jon McLaughlin but the Albion keeper stood strong.

Nigel Clough waited until 25 minutes into the second half to make his first change as he brought on Matty Palmer for Marvin Sordell.

Fernando Forestieri hadn't caused much trouble to the Brewers in either of the two meetings this season, but he nearly made up for that with a speculative over-head kick from inside the box which dropped just wide of Jon McLaughlin's left-hand post.

Jordan Rhodes left it late to join Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day, but his move went through in time and the forward has wasted no time in putting the ball in the back of the net for the Owls. He had a great chance towards the latter stages of the fixture as Barry Bannan danced his way down the left before providing a cross towards the back post but the outstretching Jordan Rhodes couldn't get a toe on it to turn it home.

Luke Varney spent two years at Hillsborough from 2009-2011 and he was well-received by the home fans when he was replaced by Cauley Woodrow on 83 minutes.
