RETAINED LIST

10 May 2017

BURTON Albion Football Club has issued it’s retained list following the conclusion of the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season.

Eight players have been offered new contracts, five players have been released from the club and three players have had year extensions taken up on their current deals. Two academy graduates have also been offered professional contracts.

All loan players have returned to their parent clubs.

Manager Nigel Clough said: “It’s only been ten days since we knew we were safe so it’s still relatively early days yet.

“When you look at the players we’ve got under contract we’ve got (Kyle) McFadzean we’ve got (Jackson) Irvine under contract, we’ve got Lucas (Akins), Matt Palmer, Damo (McCrory) and Tom Naylor then we’re trying to keep (Tom) Flanagan, (John) Mousinho, (Marvin) Sordell, (Ben) Turner, (Lloyd) Dyer, that is the nucleus of the team.

“We’re still going to have to add five or six players again, probably more, so we will work on those as well. I think the lads have done well enough to be rewarded with an offer to stay in the Championship with us.”

The following players are still under contract with the club and therefore have been retained:
Lucas AKINS
Ryan DELANEY
Ben FOX
Damien McCRORY
Matthew PALMER
Joe SBARRA
Tom NAYLOR
Luke VARNEY
Jackson IRVINE
Kyle McFADZEAN

The following players have been offered new contracts:
Tom FLANAGAN
John MOUSINHO
Ben TURNER
Marvin SORDELL
Lloyd DYER
Stephen BYWATER
Harry CAMPBELL
Shaun BARKER

The following scholars have been offered professional contracts:
Jack HALLAHAN
Jayden COTTERILL

The following players have had one-year options taken up on their current contracts:
Marcus HARNESS
Marcus DINANGA
Sam HORNBY

The following players have left the club following the expiration of their contracts:
Jon McLAUGHLIN
Lee WILLIAMSON
Phil EDWARDS
Callum REILLY
Charlie GATTER

Jon McLaughlin will be leaving the club after three years with the Brewers, and Manager Nigel Clough said: “We just feel that we want to move into a different direction with a different kind of goalkeeper. The nice thing is we’ve got Stephen Bywater who we will be offering to and hoping he will stay, we think he will. If we start the season with Stephen I don’t think anybody will be too disappointed with that. We wish him (Jon McLaughlin) all the best for whoever he goes next in his career.”

Two scholars will also turn professional this summer after Nigel Clough offered Jack Hallahan and Jayden Cotterill their first professional terms.

“Jayden and Jack have done well especially in the second half of the season,” said Clough. “It might be like Ben (Fox) where they go out on loan but they are training with us but game time to get that experience is important for them.

“I think the biggest boost that any scholars or anybody in the academy could have had was seeing Joe Sbarra come on the pitch for the last game. They train with the first team so it’s that incentive to them to say ‘come on you can be part of it’.”
