HAWKINS HEADS TO MATLOCK

5 September 2017

Callum Hawkins has joined Matlock Town on a one-month youth work-experience loan.

The under 18s goalkeeper joins Jayden Cotterill at Matlock, with the defender also on loan from the Brewers as well as Ex-Burton Albion striker Shaun Harrad, who joined the Gladiators during the summer.

Hawkins will be hoping to experience a level of success similar to that of Marcus Dinanga, who scored more than 30 goals and was named Evo-Stik Premier Division young player of the year while on loan at Matlock from the Brewers last season.

Professional Development Phase Lead Coach Sam Rose feels that the move will be beneficial to Hawkins and hopes that it will also aid other young goalkeepers in the Academy in their development.

He said: “We think that it is a fantastic opportunity for Callum. We are trying to give him the opportunity to let him experience men’s football.

“He had the opportunity to go and play a game for Belper Town in the Evo-Stick South and it was a really good experience for him and we are hoping that this spell at Matlock will test him, at the same time, it will show that he has real potential as a young goalkeeper.

“It also gives us a chance to progress the first-year goalkeeper, Ollie Fairbrother, and maybe ever progress some under 16s goalkeepers into the under 18s match-day squad, so there is a knock-on effect because now, the players who are behind Callum will have more exposure.”
