MANAGER'S VERDICT: ASTON VILLA

26 September 2017

NIGEL Clough says that Aston Villa's quality told in the end but there wasn't much wrong with his team's performance tonight.

After the 4-0 defeat to Steve Bruce's side the Brewers manager said: "We have to separate the two things - the result and the performance. It was a very poor result but the performance wasn't too bad.

"The goals we conceded - the second was a miss hit and the third was a deflection and we can't do much about that.

"But the quality of the ex-Premier League players they have showed at times.

"We started the game well and put them on the back foot but the first attack they had they scored from and then knocked  the stuffing out of us with the miss hit that crept in at the near post.

"Stephen Bywater hasn't had much to do tonight but has picked the ball out of the net four times.

"The good thing was that we kept plugging away and having a go but the quality of the players they have makes it very difficult when they get ahead."

With Wolves coming up on Saturday, Clough now has worries over two defenders.

"John Brayford and Ben Turner both picked up hamstring injuries which is why they came off. They are doubtful for Satuday and we lose Joe Mason as well."
