ROONEY TO CONDUCT U17 EURO FINALS DRAW

4 April 2018

ENGLAND'S record goal-scorer and most-capped outfield player Wayne Rooney has been named as an honorary ambassador for this summer's UEFA U17 European Championship.

The Three Lions' legend will be in attendance at St George's Park tomorrow where he will conduct the finals draw alongside John Delaney, Chairman of the UEFA Youth and Amateur Football Committee.

You can watch the draw live on Twitter via the official @England account.

The 2018 edition of the tournament, running from 4-20 May, is being held in England for the first time with some games at the Pirelli Stadium.

Rooney is no stranger to U17 Euro having burst on to the international stage as the tournament's inaugural Golden Player during the Young Lions' third-place finish in 2002 in Denmark.

The Everton striker said: "I am extremely proud to become a UEFA tournament ambassador for U17 Euro.  I was honoured to be asked to conduct the finals draw at St George's Park and support the tournament.

"It is the first opportunity for the continent's young players to showcase their talents competitively on the international stage.  I have great memories of playing in Denmark all those years ago, so I know it's a fantastic chance for any young player to represent their country and compete against the best in Europe.”

St George's Park, Chesterfield, Burton Albion, Walsall, Rotherham United and Loughborough University will be host venues for the tournament and Rooney is wishing the Young Lions all the best.

He said: "I never had the opportunity to compete in a home tournament for my country, so this could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these lads.  Hopefully they can continue the recent success of England’s development teams."

Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Paul Pogba and Mario Gotze are just some of the other stars to have graced previous editions of U17 Euro. With tickets starting from just £2 for children and £4 for adults, fans of all ages can watch Europe's future stars on their doorstep at affordable prices.
