MANAGER'S VERDICT: ROCHDALE

4 August 2018

NIGEL Clough was disappointed with the 2-1 opening day defeat but was pleased with the way his team threw everything at Rochdale although they didn't get the result their play deserved.

The Albion manager said: "I was very pleased with the performance but extremely disappointed with the result.

"The opening 20 minutes cost us the game but after that, the way we played and the chances we created were enough to win three games.

"When you give goals away in these conditions the opposition gain confidence and it's difficult when you are chasing the game when it's as warm as it is.

"We brought Ben Fox on at half-time and looked better balanced. Marvin Sordell could have had three or four goals today and he will put them in over the course of the season. He knows he shoud have got a goal or two today with his quality but it's only one game, there are 45 to go.

"We are very disappointed to lose the first game but in terms of the pattern of how we want to play that was it in the second half. We are a week to ten days behind where we would like to be today with the disruption we have had  so to get what we did out of the players in the second half was a real bonus.

"But some of our play around their penalty area and getting it into Liam Boyce's feet -teams in The Championship couldn't cope so sides in League One will struggle as well and that's how we want to play."
