HOLDING ON TO KEY PLAYERS WAS PRIORITY FOR CLOUGH

20 August 2018

NIGEL Clough says that he’s still aiming to bring in new faces but accepts that he will have a small squad due to the need to hold on to his quality players for this season.

Injuries have meant that he has been struggling to fill the bench with Joe Sbarra the latest casualty after being forced off against Doncaster with an ankle injury.

Damien McCrory (hamstring), Will Miller (knee), and Jamie Allen (back) are also sidelined at present.

“We will do our best to get someone in before Tuesday and there are a couple of youngsters from the Academy we may stick on the bench," said Clough.

“We were close to a loan signing last week but we will keep persevering and see if we can get one in this week.

“We said all along it’s going to be a tight squad and everyone will have to stay fit and that’s difficult when they are still getting up to speed.

“We had a big decision to make with the budget - to keep Boyce, Akins, McFadzean and Turner and these players we hope are going to help us challenge to get back up, or do you disassemble it and go with more players but less established ones.

“We went with the smaller numbers and more quality but it’s stretching us at this moment.

“Darren Bent’s been training with us and we might talk to him and see if he wants to sign a form – although we can’t pay him. But if he can come and go as he pleases that might just suit him.”
