CLOUGH MAY CHANGE FORMATION TO COPE WITH INJURIES

19 February 2018

NIGEL Clough could be forced to change formations at Barnsley tomorrow night as injuries bite deep into his squad.

The Brewers lost John Brayford on Saturday to a calf injury. The same problem is also keeping Ben Turner and Tom Flanagan on the sidelines and with Damien McCrory short of match fitness after a knee injury it leaves Clough with problems at the back.

He said: “We might have to change the system due to the lack of full backs. The system we have been playing, getting width and Martin Samuelsen in good positions, midfielders breaking, has worked well.

“It might be that we go back to three at the back tomorrow because of personnel available. We will have to see.”

“It will be a stretched squad tomorrow

“We nearly put Damien on against Forest but he has only done a couple of training sessions and played at Hednesford in the Birmingham Senior Cup and we didn’t think it was right to bring him on with still quite a bit of time left. But as he builds up his fitness he will be in contention. We just wish he was two weeks further down the line as it’s a big ask when you haven’t played for more than two months.”

Luke Murphy has a sore ankle after coming on as a sub on Saturday, on top of his shin still recovering from a gash and will be a doubt for tomorrow as well.

Clough said: “With a few lads carrying knocks, only those who are able to will train today. Some need to train fully, some just need a jog and a walk. It’s finding out individually what’s best for them.”
