BUXTON SIGNS NEW BREWERS DEAL

20 June 2018

JAKE Buxton has signed a new one-year deal with Burton Albion.

The captain was out of contract at the end of last season but has now accepted a new offer.

Brewers manager Nigel Clough said: “Although he didn’t play as much as he would have liked in the second half of last season Jake is a hugely important member of the team and the squad. We will need all his experience next season.

“He showed his character and leadership last season and whether he was in the team or not he was instrumental in keeping the lads going by being such a positive influence in the dressing room in those last few weeks when we so nearly did it.

“We have also lost Tom Naylor from the centre of defence so I’m sure Jake will be looking to start the season and stay in the team.

“It will be a different challenge next season and there will probably be a lot more balls coming into our box from different angles and we need someone like Jake to be in there to challenge for them.

“He’s one of those players who can’t wait for pre-season and he wants to start training and looks forward to the new season as much as anybody.”

Buxton said: “I spoke to the Gaffer at the end of the season and he asked me to stay and I was delighted to get things done and now it’s all sorted we can focus on the new season ahead and the challenge we have all got trying to get Burton back into the Championship.”

It’s a decade since Buxton first joined Burton Albion while the club was still in non-league with the defender playing an important part in the Brewers winning the Blue Square Premier (Conference) and entering the Football League for the first time in the club’s history. He was rightly named Player of the Season and earned a move to Derby County to link up with Nigel Clough for a second time.

Buxton re-joined the Brewers for the start of the 2017/18 Championship season after a spell at Wigan and was named captain by Nigel Clough.
