BURTON Albion head into tomorrow’s game with Preston North End knowing that a win may not be enough to keep them up in the Championship but would give them a very good chance.
Simply put, if Burton Albion lose, they will be relegated.
If the Brewers beat Preston and at least one of Barnsley, Birmingham City or Reading lose, Burton Albion will remain in the Championship.
Things get a little more complicated if Burton draw. Should the Brewers and Preston (who can still get into the play-offs) play out a stalemate, then Nigel Clough’s side will require Barnsley to lose to Derby County and Bolton Wanderers to fail to beat Nottingham Forest.
Here are tomorrow’s Championship fixtures that concern the relegation battle:
Birmingham City (20th) vs Fulham (3rd)
Cardiff City (2nd) vs Reading (19th)
Derby County (6th) vs Barnsley (21st)
Preston North End (7th) vs Burton Albion (22nd)
Bolton Wanderers (23rd) vs Nottingham Forest (17th)
The Brewers have never beaten Preston in a league match. Preston have beaten Burton in both meetings at the Pirelli Stadium, while the only previous meeting at Deepdale ended in a 1-1 draw.
BURTON ALBION TEAM NEWS
Damien McCrory is expected to return for the crucial clash at Deepdale, while Lloyd Dyer remains a doubt.
Nigel Clough hopes that John Brayford and Ben Turner will be fit for the game.
PRESTON TEAM NEWS
Preston will monitor the fitness of midfielder Ben Pearson prior to tomorrow’s game, while long-serving midfielder John Welsh is likely to be unavailable for the match.
