CLOUGH EXPLAINS FLANAGAN DECISION

9 May 2018

NIGEL Clough says Tom Flanagan has not done much wrong but that he has other defensive options looking ahead to the 2018/19 season.

Flanagan has been made available for transfer this summer, with the club’s retained list confirmed earlier today.

The club have offered fresh terms to out-of-contract full-back Damien McCrory, as with Jake Buxton and Tom Naylor, while John Brayford, Kyle McFadzean and Ben Turner are under contract for next season already.

“He’s got a year left (on his contract) but we have to free something up somewhere,” Clough said.

“With Brayford, Damien McCrory if he stays and Ben Turner stepping in at left-back as he did, I don’t think we can carry all four.

“He’s made 57 Championship appearances in the last two years. He did well and had a new lease of life almost at full-back.

“The reason for bringing him back (last summer) is he covers you all the way across the back four and that’s still the case but we have to make cuts somewhere and unfortunately that’s one of them.

“He hasn’t done anything greatly wrong but if Damien signs, then John Brayford and Damien will be our full-backs.”
