BREWERS WILL RING CHANGES FOR CHECKATRADE TROPHY

5 November 2018

THE Brewers will aim to use the squad to the best advantage as they take on Middlesbrough Under 21s in the Checkatrade Trophy on Wednesday.

The final group game for both clubs is a dead rubber with neither team able to progress in the competition.

That means the Brewers are likely to ring the changes, especially with a FA Cup First Round tie at Scunthorpe coming up on Saturday.

First team coach Andy Garner says: “It’s going to be an opportunity for those haven’t played many minutes. Some of our lads are tired and we can’t risk anybody.”

The Brewers can’t make wholesale changes however, due to the rules of the competition. At least four qualifying players have to be in the ten outfield starting positions.

Garner adds: “We have looked into the rules of the competition and it will be the least we have to play that is for sure. We have had a lot of games and we have to take that into account with whatever team we put out. But we are looking for those who do play to put in a good performance and show us what they can do.

“We are going to try and win the game that’s for sure. You get a little bit of money for winning but also because we want to keep the habit of winning football matches.”

Garner does not believe this match will have any bearing on the Carabao Cup quarter final at Middlesbrough in December

He said: “There won’t be many first teamers in their line up and it will be a very different game when we go to Middlesbrough in the cup.

“When I first saw the draw I didn’t think it was very good for us. But there are a lot of good sides in there and to be fair we would struggle against most of them.

"Middlesbrough will be a very difficult game but on our performances and how we are playing, we have a chance. If we play the best we can, and they are a little bit off it, we defintely have a chance to get into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.”

Please note that Wednesday's game kicks off at 7pm.
