AKINS NOT PRIORITISING GOALS OVER THE NEEDS OF THE TEAM

28 April 2019

LUCAS Akins is not putting his chance to be Albion’s top scorer for the season ahead of the needs of the team, despite drawing level with Liam Boyce after a brace against Luton Town.

For much of the season, it seemed that Boyce would be the runaway winner of Albion’s top scorer award, before Akins started an imperious run of form that has seen him score eight goals in his last 10 League One games.

The pair are now tied at 14 goals apiece heading into the final game of the season against Peterborough, with Boyce pushing hard to be fit for the match after picking up an injury against Southend United.

Akins says that he would love to see Boyce back fit as soon as possible, even if it means he does not finish top scorer, as the team is better when the Northern Ireland forward is in the squad.

He said: “I want to say that we are competitive, in that we do our jobs. If the chances present themselves, we try to take them and we will continue to do that moving forward.

“He is champing at the bit, Boycey. You see how he comes back from injury with his first goal at Aston Villa (last season) when he had to wait so long for his debut. You miss him, you miss your best players and it will be great to have him back again.”
