CLOUGH SAYS O'TOOLE IS ADAPTING WELL TO CENTRE BACK ROLE

8 August 2019

NIGEL Clough says that John-Joe O-Toole is adapting well to life as a centre back and forging a good partnership with Jake Buxton.

The summer signing from Northampton has spent most of his career as an attacking midfielder but the Brewers manager believes the player has the qualities needed to make his mark in the defence.

Clough said: “John-Joe and Jake made a good partnership and dealt with a pretty big threat from their two strikers on Saturday.

“Considering John-Joe has only played a handful of games at centre half in his career he looked pretty comfortable.

“He’s good on the ball, competes in the air and reads the game so well. I think he’s relishing it and I think as you get older it’s a natural progression and most players move back. He was a bit surprised when we first mentioned it but we saw that he had all the attributes.

“He gets to go up for every set play we have, and he will cause problems, and he’s going to be a main defender in our box as well. They were the two areas from last season that we needed to improve.”
