MANAGER'S VERDICT: GILLINGHAM

10 August 2019

NIGEL Clough says the Brewers deserved the three points after the 2-1 win at Gillingham but should have won by more.

Two goals from Nathan Broadhead turned the game in Albion’s direction after the Brewers had conceded in the seventh minute and had then missed a penalty.

The Brewers manager said: “It was a thoroughly deserved victory. We played well throughout the game despite the wind which made it very challenging conditions.

“Nathan took his goals very well. The first one, in training he has been curling them in with his right foot and he missed one just before that. It is one of his signature finishes. The second one impressed us more, it was right in the six-yard box and we scored two in two minutes and deserved to go in at half-time in the lead. That’s what we were missing at times last season.

“But saying that we still should have gone on and won by more today. We missed chances throughout the game, missed a penalty and had situations in the second half that should have got us another goal or two.

“It’s a great three points and it’s lovely to get off the mark. We should have had a point last week against Ipswich but it’s nice to come here and get the win. That sets it a little bit more straight after last week, but we still feel we are a point down already and have to gain that back in the next few weeks.

“It’s a good win but we don’t want to let games be that tight. There was a free kick that shouldn’t have been in the 92nd minute and we should not have to worry about that kind of pressure. We should be three or four up and cruising.”
