MANAGER'S VERDICT: TRANMERE (HOME)

26 December 2019

NIGEL Clough praised his team for a brilliant performance that earned back-to-back home victories for the Brewers.

After the 3-1 victory over Rochdale on Saturday Albion followed up with a 4-2 success on Boxing Day against Tranmere which delighted the Albion manager.

He said: “I thought our performance from start to finish was brilliant. We were a little bit hard done by with the two goals we conceded which got them back in the game but our attacking play, with 20 odd shots again, and the quality of the goals was excellent.

“And we should have had a penalty in the first half as well. But we told the lads not to let that define the result and it didn’t. We came out in the second half and for the first 15 minutes we were outstanding again and got another goal.

“I thought the way we handled the setbacks today was brilliant.”

Clough also praised the quality of his side’s finishing.

“They were brilliant team goals, like the ones we score in training. That’s what we haven’t always done this season, scored the kind of goals in matches we score in the week, but we have in the last two games and it’s nice to see that.

“Scott Fraser was excellent today. When you have people like him, Liam Boyce and Lucas Akins who are on their game then you have to give them the ball as they are the ones causing the damage. As a team we must realise that.”

The Brewers now face successive away games at Accrington and Bolton.

Clough said: “Confidence wise going into the new year two home wins, six points and seven goals is very important.”
