AKINS SAYS SQUAD IS IN A GOOD POSITION

7 February 2019

LUCAS Akins believes that the Brewers squad is in a good place, and hopes that the competition for places will be a good thing for the side.

Ben Fox is the only major doubt for Saturday’s game against AFC Wimbledon, with Nigel Clough having an almost entirely fit squad to choose from heading into the final few months of the season.

Akins is pleased that the squad is in a good place at the moment and hopes that the competition will see performance levels rise on the pitch.

“We have some players who have not been playing but are still fit, like Joe Sbarra. He has been excellent in training. People like him are looking to force their way into the team.

“Alex Bradley has come in and he has looked nice and bright in training. That, added to everyone being fit in the squad, will hopefully create healthy competition on the pitch. Everyone has got to know that if they don’t perform they won’t be in the side.

“We are in a good place in terms of injuries, hopefully that will continue between now and the end of the season and we can have a strong finish. It is important, no matter what position you are in the league, that you finish off in decent form.

“That does seem to carry over into the next season, as you saw with this season. We probably didn’t have the best of starts and maybe we had a bit of a hangover from last season. It can definitely work the other way, I have seen that throughout my career.”
