CLOUGH SAYS FLEETWOOD CAN STAY THE PROMOTION COURSE

17 October 2019

NIGEL Clough says that he expects Fleetwood to stay the course when it comes to challenging for promotion.

The Brewers travel to Fleetwood on Saturday to face the team in fifth place in the table with Joey Barton having won the League One Manager of the Month award for September.

Clough says Barton has done well in his first management role.

“It’s a brilliant place to start for him – a progressive club that has come up through the leagues. They have some financial backing and their recruitment has been good.

“They have a strong squad with a good balance and when you have a good start and get in that top six, I think you have every confidence you can stay there.”

The Brewers will be looking to carry on from the 3-0 win at MK Dons with another good performance on the road.

Clough said: “We will try and get something at Fleetwood and then we have two home games coming up. It’s a good week to look forward to, building up to the big cup tie against Leicester City.

“Being away from home probably suits the way we are playing and once we get that first goal, we look strong from there.

“Teams coming to the Pirelli are sitting back a bit more. Away from home it’s on them to come and create and that leaves spaces. But the quality of the goals we are scoring is important as well not just the number – just look at Oliver Sarkic’s goal against MK Dons.

“We are having to earn every goal at the moment as there aren’t too many mistakes going our way. When teams do make mistakes, we might even score a few more.”
