PIRELLI STADIUM TO HOST MORE PROSTATE CANCER SCREENINGS

29 January 2020

BURTON Albion FC will be hosting two days of prostate cancer checks at the Pirelli Stadium as part of a continuing partnership with Queen’s Hospital.

It will be the fifth year that the club has hosted the potentially life-saving tests – a ground-breaking initiative that has helped raise awareness of the risks for men.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer amongst men, and the familiarity of the football club as a host is a method of removing any ‘fear factors’ which may come from the screening programme.

Last year more than 100 men come through the free screening process over the two days.

Men aged 50-80 are now invited to make an appointment to have a full history, PSA blood test and prostate examination.

The clinics will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 2-3 at the Pirelli Stadium from 8am -5pm.

Attendance is by appointment only. Please call Megan Docksey on 01283 511 511 extension 4136 to make an appointment by Friday, March 6.

Burton Albion Chairman Ben Robinson said: “We are delighted to be able to offer the facilities at the Pirelli Stadium for the prostate cancer screenings once again.

“We have always been proud to support what is a very important project that has received national recognition.

“I would urge anyone who hasn’t had a check to book an appointment and come along to the Pirelli Stadium.”

Jyoti Shah, consultant urological surgeon at Queen’s Hospital, said: “Burton Albion holds a special place for us, as this is where the prostate campaign began in 2016. So far, we have checked nearly a thousand men for prostate cancer at the club’s venue.

“The campaign has made a huge difference to people’s lives and we will continue to work in, and for our local community to combat the ills of cancer. We would like to say a special thank you to Burton Albion FC and its Chairman Ben Robinson for their ongoing support. I hope men will continue to take up this opportunity for a prostate check.”
