JAKE Buxton said that his players underperformed tonight as they went down 1-0 to Rochdale
It was a tight game and it always looked like one goal would settle it but the Albion manger said his team should have done better.
He said: “We did OK in periods in the first half and we created a couple of opportunities from playing down the sides and from crosses in the box. Kane Hemmings hits the post, and it’s small margins that make a difference.
“But we gave away too many silly free kicks in the second half and then conceded from a set play which is disappointing.
“We had a bit of a go in the second half, but not enough.
“There are too many underperforming at the minute. There were a lot of senior players out on the pitch who have played a lot of games and I expected the performance level to be higher than it was.
“The work we put in on Saturday, the structure of the team and what we wanted to carry on into today should have taken us forward, but it didn’t happen.
“We need to move the ball a lot quicker, we got a lot of balls in the box in the second half and we should have got on the end of at least one.
“We created opportunities but nowhere enough and we need players to step up and perform.”
The Brewers find themselves at the foot of the table and although it’s early days Buxton wants the players to note where his team stand.
“They need to look at the table because we are disappointed with the performance. We took huge strides on Saturday in terms of being solid and finished the game off very well and did more than enough to win the game.
“I spoke about it being a big week for us with two home games. We needed to step forward and perform and we didn’t today.
“But we will roll our sleeves up and I will look for a response on Saturday.”
