INJURY NEWS BOOST FOR BREWERS AHEAD OF PORTSMOUTH TRIP

9 April 2021

JIMMY Floyd Hasselbaink’s Brewers squad has received an injury boost ahead of back-to-back road trips to Portsmouth and Doncaster.

Sean Clare and Jonny Smith, who both came off injured during the 2-1 win over Swindon on Easter Monday, are expected to recover and be in contention for a start tomorrow at Portsmouth, while Dany Rowe, who suffered a hamstring problem at Blackpool in March, is also on the way back.

Hasselbaink said: “Sean and Jonny haven’t trained a lot, but they have been with the group. We assessed them both on Tuesday and in both cases it wasn’t as bad as we feared, and they will be both available for selection.

“That’s massive for us as they are two important players for the team who have been playing regularly.

“Danny Rowe has also improved and will be in the squad tomorrow.

“It always helps when you have an extra day to prepare after playing on Monday as well.

“It was a massive three points against Swindon and that puts us in a good position but there is still work to be done. You can take nothing for granted in football and have to keep going.”

Tomorrow the Brewers travel to promotion-chasing Portsmouth who have won their last four games.

Hasselbaink said: “They are a top team, and our challenge is can we overcome them. We are concentrating on can we get a really good performance. Everything we have done before is history and we have to attack what is in front of us.

“Everybody is talking about the Cowley brothers and their impact, but we aren’t playing them but the players on the pitch. They maybe sky high in confidence but that can be quickly shattered if you do the right things.

"We are playing 11 players and our 11 players need to be better on the day. We have a game plan for that and hopefully we can execute it.”
