MANAGER'S VERDICT: OXFORD

11 August 2021

JIMMY Floyd Hasselbaink thought his team deserved to progress in the Carabao Cup after creating the better chances.

But ultimately his team bowed out on penalties despite scoring a last gasp equaliser to make the score 1-1 at 90 minutes.

The manager said: “The performance was really good but we need to do better in the final third. We had two balls cleared off the line, we looked dangerous going forward and it was just that final bit we are looking for and need to get better at. But we are playing a wide player as a striker and he’s doing a really good job.

“Despite that, we deserved to win. We had the better chances, we made them defend. It was tough for them, and we won a lot of corners and got a lot of headers in. We just need to create more from open play in the final third. That’s a process and we want to get a couple of strikers back and go from there.”

With both Kane Hemmings and Louis Moult missing through injury Hasselbaink admitted that he is trying to get another striker in.

He said: “Fingers crossed. We are busy with one and trying really hard to get one in on loan. We don’t just want a body we want to get the right one. We have identified him, but we have to wait.”

Another blow for the Brewers was an injury to Deji Oshilaja.

Hasselbaink said: “We are concerned to see him on crutches after the game. He tried to run it off but it’s his ankle and his knee and that’s a really big one for us.”
