BREWERS RE-SIGN SAM HUGHES ON LOAN FROM LEICESTER CITY

31 August 2021

BURTON Albion are delighted to confirm the return of defender Sam Hughes to the Pirelli Stadium.

Hughes, who made a big impression on Brewers fans during a loan spell that was ended prematurely by injury last term, has returned on another loan deal until January.

The 24-year-old scored twice in 15 appearances, netting in consecutive home games against Charlton Athletic and Crewe Alexandra last season.

Hughes began his career close to his home of West Kirby with Chester, making 57 appearances at the Deva Stadium before being snapped up by the Foxes in 2017 and becoming a regular in their U23 side.

Hughes now re-joins the Brewers and adding another defensive option for manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who is delighted to get the defender back for the season.

"We all know Sam - he had a magnificent time here before he got injured," said Hasselbaink. "He's still injured but we know what he can bring and we need to be a little bit patient with him.

"We definitely think we can get him fit and then he will be a great force for us."

"I'm delighted to be returning to Burton Albion - even though my time last year was cut short due to my injury, I couldn't have enjoyed my time any more," said Hughes.

"It's an amazing club with great people who gave me the opportunity to play league football. I'm really excited and ambitious and I want to help the club achieve its goals this season.

"I'm doing everything I can to get back to full fitness in the near future, and I just want to say a huge thank you to the fans for all your support, I'll see you soon."

Welcome back, Sam!
