BURTON Albion are delighted to announce the signing of striker Mike Fondop on a contract until the end of the season.
Fondop signs for the Brewers after his short-term deal at National League side Aldershot Town expired and he potentially goes into the squad for this afternoon's game at home to Sunderland.
The 27-year-old Cameroonian spent the 2019/20 season at Chesterfield and was the Spireites’ top scorer that campaign with 11 goals in 30 games.
Prior to that, Fondop had spells with Wrexham, Oxford City and Margate, and now adds another option to manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s attack.
“He’s a big boy, a good target man, but also mobile,” said Hasselbaink.
“We have been looking to add a striker because we only have Kane Hemmings who is struggling with injury, Luke Varney and Lucas Akins – who is playing striker and doing well – and we feel we need back-up in that position.
“He’s also someone who can come off the bench and he can play in a different way and we can be more direct.
“He has a nose for goal, he’s a threat in the air and we are happy he has signed a short-term contract and, in the summer, we will look at it again.”
Fondop, who has been training with the Brewers for the last week, is delighted to have signed for the Brewers and says the squad and staff have really helped him settle in at the Pirelli Stadium.
“I’m very, very excited. I couldn’t sleep on Thursday night, just because of the news I was told (about signing),” Fondop told iFollow Brewers.
“I can’t wait to hit the ground running and to show to the club and the fans what I’m capable of doing.
“I have to mention that the welcome from the players and the staff has been amazing. Since day one, everyone has been very welcoming to me, from the manager to his staff and the playing staff.
“I didn’t feel like a stranger and that has helped me to integrate easily. All the sessions were technical with very good players, and I feel that my level is definitely going to rise up, and I’m going to learn a lot from them.”
Fondop will wear squad number 33. Welcome to Burton Albion, Mike!
