BURTON ALBION SIGN JONNY SMITH FROM BRISTOL CITY

29 January 2021

Burton Albion are delighted to confirm the signing of winger Jonny Smith on a permanent deal from Championship side Bristol City.

Smith has spent the first part of the season on loan with Sky Bet League One side Swindon Town but has now signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Brewers after leaving the Championship outfit.

The 23-year-old was signed by City from Wrexham, where he played as a youth, and had spells on loan at Cheltenham Town, AFC Fylde and Tranmere Rovers.

Smith then spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League Two, where he was a teammate of fellow new signing Tom Hamer.

In his season at Boundary Park, Smith was the Latics' top scorer, netting nine times in the league and 11 in all competitions prior to the season's curtailment.

As with Hamer, this move reunites Smith with assistant manager Dino Maamria, who managed Oldham last season.

Manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was delighted to secure Smith's signature. He said:"We're very happy with the signing of Jonny Smith.

"He will offer us something that we don't already have in the house.

"He's a left footed winger, who can get past someone, is a good crosser of the ball and is good in one versus one situations.

"We're glad he's chosen us as a club and we believe that he has a bright future ahead."

Smith was delighted to put pen-to-paper at the Pirelli Stadium, and is eager to meet his new teammates and get started.

"It feels great to be here, it's a fantastic club," Smith told iFollow Brewers.

"I'm left-footed, I'm quick, I'll always try to get at players and make it exciting for the fans.

"Goals are a big part of my game and I want to score them for Burton Albion now!"

Welcome to Burton Albion, Jonny!
