MATCH REPORT: SCUNTHORPE UNITED 2-1 BURTON ALBION

20 July 2021

The Brewers slipped to a 2-1 pre-season defeat at the Sands Venue Stadium against League Two side Scunthorpe United as preparations for the new season continued.

Jonny Smith grabbed the Brewers goal, a first half equaliser after former Albion defender George Taft had headed home the opener but a home team trialist scored what proved to be the winner midway into the second half.

It was another good workout for the Brewers who gave the majority of the starting side at least an hour on the pitch building up match fitness against a lively home side who stretched the Brewers back line on several occasions.

Scunthorpe were the first to threaten when a long ball found Ryan Loft up against the Brewers trialist and the striker muscled his way into a position to fire off a shot from the edge of the box that flew wide.

Ellery Balcombe was forced into an excellent save on ten minutes from United's Triallist A, a well directed free kick arcing towards the top corner before the Brentford loanee's intervention after Tom Hamer had brought down former Albion academy forward Devarn Green who was skippering The Iron.

But it was TAFT who stole in at the back post onto a curling cross from the right after a quarter of an hour to comprehensively beat Balcombe.

Albion took just five minutes to equalise, SMITH hunting down a long ball before cutting inside the box and firing an angled shot beyond Tom Collins into the far corner.

Both sides continued to look lively but it was Albion who went closest to hitting the front eight minutes before the break, a slick moving getting Hamer in behind the United defence and his cross was just inches away from the outstretched boot of Kane Hemmings.

Half time: Scunthorpe United 1-1 Burton Albion

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson was the only substitution for Albion as the second half got under way, the former Iron loanee replacing triallist.

The Iron went close to regaining the lead on 51 minutes a slide rule ball through the Burton defence picking out Loft's run but the striker's finish was tame and straight at Balcombe.

Albion's second change came on 57 minutes and saw Morris replaced by loan signing Jacob Maddox.

Scunthorpe went back in front on the hour when triallist B, looking suspiciously offside from a through ball, held off the attentions of Tom O'Connor to poke a shot in off the post. The home side then proceeded to change their entire eleven for the remainder of the game.

A flurry of substitutions somewhat disrupted the second half but Albion were able to get skipper John Brayford out on the pitch for the last quarter of an hour, his first minutes on the pitch in pre-season.

Louis Moult was close to a late equaliser twisting sharply inside the box but with the angle against him he could only find the side netting.

Albion now turn their attentions to the Bass Charity Vase on Saturday afternoon when Leicester City are the visitors to the Pirelli Stadium.
