JIMMY Floyd Hasselbaink says his squad needs more cover in central defence before the 2021/22 season starts.
The Brewers still managed to shut out Premier League Leicester City with a trialist at centre back on Saturday but the manager knows he is short of cover in that department.
Hasselbaink said: “I like to have four centre halves in the building. We have Michael Mancienne and Michael Bostwick, but Bostwick is injured and only just starting to come back.
“We are looking and trying to find a centre back who will improve us. Ryan Leak did well there for us against Leicester and looked solid but that is an area we are looking at.
“We need strength in depth to keep those who are playing honest and to have players knocking on their door trying to get their place. We want cover for injuries, and we want people fighting for places.
“I’m not classifying Deji Oshilaja as a centre half but he can play there and left back so if we have a big problem I can put him there. It’s a luxury to have him here as he’s the kind of player you can put in several positions.
“It’s the same with Tom O’Connor, there are different places I can fit him in. You need those kind of players in your squad.
“We were good defensively against Leicester and I like it when we are stubborn and make it difficult for the opposition.”
