JIMMY Floyd Hasselbaink said the pre-season friendly against Newcastle was a "good exercise" for his squad.
The Brewers went down 2-0 to the Premier League club with goals early in each half.
Hasselbaink said: "They are a very good team and gave us different problems to Leicester on Saturday. The first goal we conceded we need to clear the ball early on.The second goal was from a corner and was disappointing.
"Overall our structure was good and they do ask you questions but I think it was a good day for us and the fans. I don't think we have to be embarrassed."
The downside for the Brewers was the injury to Kane Hemmings coming after the blow of losing Louis Moult.
Hasselbaink said: "It is a hamstring. We don't know yet but hopefully it's not bad."
Those injuries may have an impact on the manager's first starting line up of the new season.
He said: "I had a plan but we need to adjust. I always like players to fight for places so we will have a look this week where they are and we will prepare for the game and decide who will play."
